Newnham is fortunately home to a vibrant and tightly knit LGBTQ+ community, and has a history of tolerance and acceptance of nonconformity to gender stereotypes and binaries. There are a number of LGBTQ+ events happening both in Newnham and university-wide, with a wide range of activities suitable for all different demographics and preferences. At Newnham, we hold queer arts and crafts sessions and pre-drinks for queer club nights for example, but if there are any LGBTQ+ events you’d like to see at Newnham, please contact the current LGBTQ+ officer.
The CUSU LGBT+ Campaign (Cambridge University Student Union), puts on university-wide LGBTQ+ events all year round, which have ranged from speaker-events and forums to bar nights.
Running fun events is not the only responsibility held by the JCR LGBTQ+ role, but another facet of the role is providing students with welfare support – the LGBTQ+ Officer is there if you need to chat to another student about being LGBTQ+, if you need any direction to other resources, or if you need any advice about facing the struggles and joys that come with queerness.
If you have any questions, please contact the current LGBTQ+ Officer at jcr.lgbt@newn.cam.ac.uk
Or contact the current Trans and Non-binary Officer at jcr.transandnb@newn.cam.ac.uk
